I finally saw The Hunt for Wilderpeople, which was suggested by someone on this thread (sorry, can't remember who you are, friend)
I really liked it, but it took me a while to "get it".
First time I saw it I wasn't in the best of moods, so that kinda played a huge part. Because I am a goddamn feminazi, I was in rage when one of the main female characters got fridged right at the start of the movie. I loved that woman, and frankly I am still kinda angry about it. I wish this movie was just about her, the chubby boy, and Sam Niel would go fuck himself.
And I was so pissed at this particular aspect of the movie that I actually wasn't going to even finish it. Like I said, terrible mood, and things like that really tip me off.
Fortunately, after that it really grew on me, when I gave it a second chance. Hard to explain, it's just such a damn fine movie. It's like if "Stand by me" was directed by Wes Anderson. Most of the movie is this whimsy tale about a family, but then it has some crazy tonal whiplash moments (which I still loved). And the two main characters were really adorable. I really respect them for having a really fat kid as the lead, and not making a billion "ha-ha he is fat" jokes. Although, there were some.
Sam Niel is pretty much better than ever here. I stopped seeing an actor there, and saw the character, which was great.
Songs were great too.
I have some problems, but mostly minor once. I think that the characters are really hard to relate to about 1/3 of the picture, because the script doesn't give em any noticable positive qualities. And the kid has this hunting rifle, that had a tendency to dissapear in between shots. At first I thought that maybe he had it in his backpack, but then I saw that it's clearl bigger than his backpack, so sometimes he would have it in a scene, and other times it's gone.
Overall, good movie. I am becoming a Taika Waititi fan. I kinda have hope that he is the next Peter Jackson. What We do in the Shadows was his trashy low-budget fun experiment like "Brain Dead". and Hunt for Wilderpeople is kinda like his "Heavenly creatures". I hope that "Thor Ragnarok" is his Lord of the Rings breakthrough hit.
