Watching Star Trek Beyond now that the bluray's out. I saw it in theaters but had a headache that night, so it was hard to enjoy it. Everybody loved it in the reviews, though, so... maybe this time I'll like it more?
And I have to applaud J.J. He tricked us all into this Star Trek reboot thing so that the studios would give him a blank check.
And all this careful planing just to make the most expensive Beastie Boys music video of all time.
But jokes aside, the villain was a little weak, I feel. It was pretty clear early on, what his motivations would be and who he actually was.
And it was … meh. I hoped there would be more behind this.
I also thought, that the whole situation was terrible convenient. They found all this alien tek tek and could build up an army right in front the super duper space station.
Like in arms reach. There was a lot of inconsistency in this flick. Just moments, were I had to say no. That's not how space works, even in Star Trek.
And don't let me start with these drones...
But it speaks for the movie, that I liked it regardless.
Aside from that, yeah, the villain isn't too interesting. I also had issues with Jaylah being presented as a badass but the actress not being properly trained in how to hold a sword (she threatens Scotty by holding it at arm's length with elbow locked. You have little maneuverability to actually strike in that position). Also, the movie's stakes overall feel a little lower than other Trek movies, where it's just about saving one planet and one space station... but I can see where that would be a good thing too, so I can't complain too much.
Curious what they're going to do in the next one, since they've already said Kirk will somehow reunite with his dead father.
