Could I just interrupt here for a second? CGI in Anime – and I don't mean doing the animations and such on a computer, because most Studios are doing that now. I mean blatantly obvious CGI robots (for example), which have nothing to do with the rest of the art style. This stuff made me drop so many series, but I rarely here anyone complain about this. Am I just to old school?
Seems like a lot of shows did that back in the 90s... though come to think of it, Korra season 4 had out-of-place CGI robots too.

It bothers me too!!!! I feel like it's just really jarring. I am soooo happy that they dropped it from Sailor Moon Crystal. As a lifelong Sailor moon fan that animation was killing me.
Oh but it's not just something from the 90s. Granted it was way worse then … the 'mecha' in blue submarine no. 6 come to mind. But I feel like its everywhere now! For example Macross Delta. I love the old Macross OVA and Movies and was hyped for a new entry in the saga. And it was all CGI space combat and harem anime girls – which is another thing, that seems to be the new go to for lazy character writing. I just don't understand why the studios can't decide for one thing or the other. An all CGI style can be good (or at least bearable): Knights of Sidonia did it good, I think and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and Arise did a good job blending 3d CGI with the rest of the animation.

CG doesn't bother me too much if it's used right. I actually think robots are an obvious choice for CG animation since their movement can be as smooth or erratic as your want. The problem is that they often aren't artistically consistent. You can't have a 2D background with 2D characters with their own lighting, shading, distance, proportions, and character design and then throw in a 3D model without considering that. It seems like a lot of animation directors still don't know how to hide CG well (and it definitely isn't just an anime problem).
Hm ... guess I will be doomed to just watch cute girls doing cute things then. At least until animators recover the art, of making robots look cool, which apparently was lost in the 80s.
I've heard the original anime was good, but when I first read the manga I was REALLY confused about what homunculi were because of the difference between the manga version and what people told me about the anime version (I caught the Brotherhood episode on tv where they showed the first homunculus, and kept wondering "wait, don't all homunculi come from trying to transmute the dead? ....and for that matter, why have there only been seven attempts to transmute the dead in ALL OF HISTORY?").
If I recall correctly, homunculi in FMA: Brotherhood are created by Father/First Homunculus and are supposed represent the emotions that Father removed from his psyche in pursuit of his grand goals.
As for the 2003 series, it's stated that homunculi can't survive on their own and have to consume red stones (quasi-philosopher stones) in order to survive. I'd assume that there were other homunculi in past before the series began but they probably died without nutrition from red stones.

You didn't like FMA Brotherhood? I haven't seen the first FMA anime, but I've read some of the manga and like what I've seen of Brotherhood (since it's the same story, plus a pointless action scene thrown into the first episode)
I love the 2003 anime and the manga. The 2003 anime was one of the animes that got me into anime. I hate Brotherhood. It's poorly directed and the pacing is stupid. It's the only show I've hate-watched. Maybe it's because I read the manga first, and Brotherhood is pretty much the manga scene-by-scene, but I thought it was really boring to watch.
I hope you'll like the rest of Brotherhood though! There're some who like Brotherhood better than the original and vice versa. I seem to be a bit of an outlier in actually disliking it
I'm with you on this one Miran. On top of bad direction and pacing, I loathed the sound editing, bad comic timing, and extraneous characters.
Brotherhood also has the honorary distinction of having one of the most boring primary antagonist ever in Father/First Homunculus.

How so? Outside of the CG (which...yeah, it bugged me a little, especially when the CG models pop open and animated heads start talking underneath them. Sticks out like a sore thumb).
I'm rarely funny, but I do have my moments. Hopefully you get to see more of them than not
I know of Tiger and Bunny and it looks like everything I don't want out of an anime, though I'm willing to be told otherwise.
The first 13 episodes are competently made and a lot of fun, but episode 14 demonstrates a precipitous drop in quality and it only gets worse after that.

Are we ever going to get more Mushishi? Next Passage was an awesome season, but there deserves to be so much more!
I'm pretty sure Bell Droplets is meant to be the end of the series. I haven't seen it though.
Hmm... missed this special coming out. Apparently adapts the last arc of the final manga volume... must now hunt this down!
Incidentally, I highly recommend Mushishi - the visuals are stunning, the storytelling is an absolute masterpiece, and it's the kind of thing that crawls around deep in your head, stirring up thoughts and feelings for days after watching an episode. I put it up there with Bebop for depth of writing and triumph of style. Next Passage (which is the second season) is on both Crunchy Roll and Netflix. The whole series is episodic in nature, so there's really not much missed by jumping into Next Passage (or any single episode, really). You do miss the episode in the first season that shows the main character as a child and provides some additional context for his current situation, but I'm hopeful that they'll get the first season back on netflix sometime.
