Zoey was standing in the Avant Garde's HQ and was going to try an experiment on the barrier when she heard a groaning noise from just outside. She stepped out to see that somebody had placed a large blue cabinet just beyond the door of the HQ building. Just as she was going to ask who had put it there, the cabinet door opened and an old man stepped outside. He waved a wand around his head that whined as it moved.
"Fascinating! A semi permeable barrier... but light can pass through it... apparently infinite in extent... centred here... hmmm."
"Hello... Sir?" inquired Zoey.
"Ahh, hello there, can you tell me anything about this barrier?"
"It lets people in but doesn't let them out?"
"Yes, I can see that... but it's infinite in extent, as far as I can see. An extension of E-Space into this dimension? Some sort of dimensional folding?"
"It's something my people created to... wait, it'll be easier to show you." He stepped back into the cabinet. "Just step in here." He paused for a moment. "Wait, are you still a child? Do you need to let your parents where you are? Wouldn't want to get slapped again."
"Not... exactly. I'm a lot older than I look."
"Not as much as I am, I'll bet," replied the old man. "Come in - it'll be a surprise!"
Zoey stepped inside the box and found herself in a large room, dominated by a hexagonal - altar? It was covered in levers, buttons and dials and a large, greenish column connected it to the ceiling.
"It's..." the old man was smiling "...a portal? Is the other end outside Ilium?"
The old man looked crestfallen.
"Not the answer I was expecting, but good theory. No, it's Time Lord technology that permits it to be transdimensionally folded, so that it's..."
"Like a giant Bag of Holding!"
Again, the old man seemed disappointed.
"I suppose you could use it to produce something as small as a bag - you could even sew them into a coat..." he produced an implausibly large microscope from his pocket, putting it down on the altar(?). "Well, let's see if the old girl can get through this barrier..." he said, patting the altar. "OK, last chance to back out...? This could get rough!"
"You have a way out?"
"Yes!" he said enthusiastically. "Well, probably..." He pushed something on the altar and at once the entire chamber filled with a horrible groaning noise, while lights moved up and down within the column.
"Is it supposed to be making that noise?"
"Not according to my wife... Hang on!"
The noise subsided and then the entire room juddered. The old man began frantically running around pulling levers and spinning dials. The groaning returned, the room juddered and wisps of smoke began curling from the altar. Looking resigned, the old man flipped a lever and the smoke began to disperse. The groaning subsided and he looked thoughtful.
"This might take longer than I thought." He put his hand to his chin. "I'm the Doctor, by the way."
"Zoey," replied the girl.
"Well, Zoey, time to find out what's going on around here!"
End of Part 1
[If anyone cares where this falls in Doctor Who continuity, it's meant to be 12, after Clara left but before he met Bill. Try to spot all the Who references I've planted - there's no prize beyond that undescribable feeling of smugness for getting them!]
