I'm not surprised either, but I'm disappointed how they went about it. At least Star Trek had enough respect to say the old material was an alternate timeline instead of some bullshit about "truth in legends". I'd also hoped they'd only ditch the post-RotJ stuff, instead of EVERYTHING
Agreed on the progress of post-RotJ stuff... Thrawn trilogy was amazing, Jedi Academy was good, Hand of Thrawn was good, but otherwise it's a long train of minor wars on a yearly basis (going by the timeline), leading up to NJO which, though I respect it for being bold enough to create an entirely new threat, also started the unfortunate trend of using character death to make stories "shocking". Chewie's death was well-handled, but the others felt gratuitous and irksome in that, since they couldn't kill Han/Luke/Leia (who had hundreds of stories by that point), they had to kill the coolest EU characters instead. I did like Jacen's turn to the dark side, and found his progression more believable than most, but I couldn't get invested in much past that... Except Legacy, which was amazing and beautiful and I love it XD (and I'm rambling).
Moving forward, though, I just want to see my favorite characters back. What kills me the most about the canon wipe is that I won't get to read another new story about Mara, Revan (or anyone from KotOR), the Legacy characters, the Boba Fett who was badass enough to explode his way out of the sarlaac (his canon appearances are admittedly lackluster), Jacen, Jaina, etc... I don't really give a damn about Ezra, Kanan, or anyone from the new expanded canon. (Also sad that new books are limited to just Clone Wars and Rebels for reference material. I love when the books pull out small details, like having Maul run into Komari Vosa in Lockdown)
Thank the Force they're at least letting Timothy Zahn do a new Thrawn book now.
