When I came home yesterday and red this post, I really wanted to say a lot about it. I started writing (always takes a while for me), but had to go to training shortly after and couldn't finish it. When I cam back and read my own stuff again, it turned to total bullshit of course.
So second try and will make it short. The time frame could take in more in the realm of Four-Dimensionalism – which wasn't really invented in the time of the old Greek philosophers. Identity based on a living person? I see what you mean, but there is a lot of room for nitpicking there and identity isn't just restricted to a human. Practically everything we talk and think about needs identity, otherwise it is very hard to grasp.
For the whole body and memory issue, I assume you make rash conclusion. It may be true, that the identity of a (dead) body is decided by others, because the former owner obviously can't anymore, but you can't turn this around from there. To say, that identity is only achieved by a living brain, capable of having memories and a body, that goes with it … uh I hear a lot of ethic nerds and hippies cry out. But maybe I just didn't understand you right.
I don't know, if the factor if time in the metaphor is important that much. It just shows that the change was gradual, not instant. The change was brought by rebuilding AND using - maybe those things should be separated?
As I said, originally it probably wasn't as important and there is now way to know what actually happened historically, but the thought experiment was used by philosophers for over two thousand years to rant on about the problem of identity.
My thought was, that the time aspect would be kind of a reward: You can live over a thousand years, but you have to replace your organic parts piece by piece including your brain, sooner or later (the flesh is weak! Sorry Mechanicum comin through). Now you could ask the question; would you still be you, although nothing of your original form exists anymore? If you say yes, your definition of 'self', would maybe be that of thought patterns, which have nothing to do with the physical realm. You would be an (metaphysical) Idealist. But just this tiny argument (not even considering, if you would be willing to pay that price for a long life) has so much room for further questions. A Dualist would probably say, that the the change in your physical appearance, would change your thoughts as well, hence you are bound to the physical realm in some way at the end. I will stop here for now because there is no real end to all of this.
Teleporters in sci-fi has always bothered me for this exact reason. They almost never point out how the person teleporting isn't dead and replaced by a clone with the same memories. It's jsut all ignored and nothing is wrong (except when everything goes horribly wrong)
The question of is he dead and replaced probably depends on your definition of dead. If you think about it, a transporter has to convert matter to energy and vice versa, if it ought to transport you over a great distance. So all the particles your body is made of, are transformed into energy and then send away. You could say that it is your energy, so it is you, but if this technology is so advanced, there would be no need to use the same energy. Simply take some energy and transform it back into the atoms required. Would be much more efficient.
Then the same goes for sleep (though your brain doesn't actually ever stop doing it's thing while you sleep so there shouldn't actually be much reason to worry) And this thought actually used to keep me up at night to I came to the conclusion that if I really just em an constant cycle of thought that is reborn every morning then so be it.
So is it important, that the brain doesn't stop working to keep identity the same? When you are in an induced coma for an operation, your brain activity is very low, lower than it is in sleep mode. And what about someone that was reanimated. The brain definitely stopped working there for a bit and it would be questionable to say that this person isn't the same anymore.
In the end, the metaphysical speculations are just that. More interesting are the implications that come from them in the physical realm. Legal consequences for example. How can I be responsible for some thing, that yesterday me did? At this point all philosophy falls apart and bows to the requirements of the real world.
Welcome. Now I'm interested in what you plane on streaming. And don't worry, as far as know, almost every one here has so far claimed to not be the most social consolidated of all people.
Well, I guess there is the historical side and the philosophical side. Both of them were more intertwined in this age, since philosophers often used historical events or persons as metaphors for the things, they wanted to talk about. There are also more scenarios for the Theseus ship, which are a bit different; the harbor master took the discarded planks and build a new ship in the neighboring dock. This should make the argument about the question which one is Theseus ship: the newly assembled one from the old parts, ore the one in the original dock, made out of new parts. This of course couldn't have happened over a thousand years. I just think, that the aspect of time would maybe change peoples perspective on the argument, especially in the light of our current state of technologies and possibility's.
Additionally, I would like to apologize to all for the overly critical tone of my post last night. Reading over it again today after getting some actual sleep, I realize that the frustration expressed could be taken as dissatisfaction with the job that Austin is doing, and that was not my intention or how I feel. I've been both player and GM in my time, and know how tough it can be for both sides to try and strike a happy balance that makes for enjoyable sessions and a satisfying campaign with just an average group of gaming nerds. With the wide variance of player experience and rule knowledge, as well as the fact that Dice Funk's being done as an artistic piece of entertainment for an audience, any Dice Funk DM's got his hands beyond full. I honestly think that Austin has been doing an good and admirable job in keeping things together, flowing, and amusing, and is deserving of more thanks than he gets. (Much love to our Slothy Funkmaster!)
Hard-line, unilateral No's have always been a bit of a hot button for me, and cause me to bristle. This, however, is my own issue, and I will endeavor to keep personal shortcomings out of these posts, as they don't really belong or add anything to the discussion.
It wasn't maybe as bad as you think. You can have your own opinion on things and express it ... no one (especially not here, I assume) would take it the wrong way, or start crying (maybe just a little).
I'm also split on the duck front, as I mentioned and some other people are, too. Could this be it? The great debate of your time? Forget Trump vs. Hillary! It's Pro Duck or Anti Duck! Chose your side and make a better tomorrow for us all!
Hey an episode about philosophical implications? I'm on board! Apropos on board. Just want to talk about the ship for a second. I'm not sure if this is really wrong, or if I just was taught incorrectly; but I heard the story about the ship of Theseus twice now, in about ten hours and not the way I know it.
The parts of the ship ware not replaced on the adventure (I mean of course there were repairs, but not to the extend that makes the story interesting). The people of Crete demanded sacrifices from the people of Athene in the form of 14 virgins (seven male and seven female … hmmm). That was total bs of course and Theseus promised to bring them back. After a lot of hot dungeon action, he did so and as a thx dude, the Athens kept his ship ready in the dock (making a celebratory sale to Crete every year), for allegedly a thousand years! In this time, the parts were exchanged; over a thousand years. The argument could maybe change a little, when the time is concerned; would you be willing to exchange your precious bits for augments, if you could life a thousand years? Would you still be yourself? Enough about boats now.
The function of the transporter, was never a thing I really thought about much, because Brundle himself stated, that it would not reproduce something and not really transport, rather than make a new thing. It's splitting hairs in some way, but words have (explicit) meaning and for me it was always clear, that he destroyed himself, the first time he used it. That's also the way the Star Trek teleprompters probably work. They can't 'transport' atoms from A to B, even if the atoms 'ride on an energy wave function', or some other technobabble. It isn't possible, that they are the same Atoms, because Riker was once split into two (full) persons and this wouldn't be possible using just his atoms. Would have been funny though, if there were two little Rikers. So the atoms are transformed into energy, transporter, and transformed back to atoms. And because of thermodynamic (which makes the whole thing questionable in it self) there has to be extra energy, when an accident happens to make more atoms? So you are build up from the ground regardless.
That brings me to the body/mind theory Leon talked about and I always thought was the point of the story. Body Theory and Mind Theory in their raw form and on their own, are (probably) nonsense. One always influences the other, though we don't have ways to fully proof that – at least the mind without a body (now I want to talk about Major Kusanagi...). For me the crux of the story, was the splicing with the fly. That was the thing, that changed him, because he wasn't himself anymore – the lost in translation thing about the transporter, he mentioned earlier on. The body horror is just Cronenberg being Cronenberg, but there was this change in his mental state, that was more interesting. Even though the fly was small and had just the most basic of instincts, it changed this man of science, who never really thought about family, into some one obsessed with reproduction – not just sex, he wanted a child. Weirdo. And he also became more 'physical' aware of himself and others. He became jealous about his girl friend and he became aware of how ripped he were (which by the way, is totally not how a seclusive scientist would look. Good job Jeff, for making everyone insecure). Of course it is strange, that the changes in the body progressed in such a horrific way and weren't immediate – which they should have been, according to the transporter theory. But I guess that is an artistic way, of showing his mental changes and just some cronenbergness. Talked so much shit. Done now.
I took it that Chance was planning to track down and escape through the rift into the feywild, and decided he wouldn't need the ticket anymore since Glittergold airships are prone to getting destroyed by pirates anyway.
That could be possible. Maybe he saw his opportunity to 'borrow' a handful of rare books and other things from the library in Mithrendain. Though a Tiefling would kind of stand out in the Feywild, I assume. But he has every right to be there, because he is on a cultural exchange program from the university of Kaldu (? a joke I didn't get I presume) I also like the idea, that he also came across Steve and his boys. In the end, he traded their knifes for … magic sand! I mean the knifes wouldn't help them much, when the island is under water, but magic sand is always good to have! It stays always dry, even under water!
Also Lauren singing Did you know the text by heart? But that Nixie though … obviously a predator, who lurks for that sweet sweet unicorn flesh. I mean Dora is a clearly a fake ID...
Honestly, I found it a little frustrating to hear Austin just shut the whole idea down out of hand: A DM is in the job of world-building, and a good world can have just about any kind of character in it.
I can see what you mean and I would also like to see that Duck become a reality – and if it's just to hear a flash back episode, like this one, about an irresponsible wizard. But I also can understand Austin, because he would probably have to go out of his way to make sure, that the duck can do anything useful and isn't killed in the second episode. Especially with Leons play style. Maybe he could play a cowardly duck? What class would a duck even have, that makes sense (rogueduck!)? So many questions. Maybe its a good idea after all...
Awesome work, awesome coloring. And I really don't want to be that guy, especially since you are now done with the color ... but doesn't a magpie have this characteristic long tail feather?
How did that Tiefling got away from the island without a ticket? And also Prof. Chance? Get out of here … he is obviously a con man and I don't just say that, because I have prejudice against Tieflings. Bookboy got scammed again - or for the first time.
Also, I looked up the pronunciation for Tiefling. I always thought it derived from tief (german for deep), but allegedly it should sound somewhat like Teufel (german for devil) … which it really doesn't and I never would have guessed that. So neither of the pronunciations makes sense.
Well, we now officially reached the point, where I'm to much of a pleb.
I like the one with Cthulhu and the tentacle though. But why is the tentacle trying to better Cthulhus relationship with puny humans? Didn't the tentacles try to conquer the world themselves? Or at least the purple one?
Purple guy is supposed to be Nyarlathotep (that's how he looks in that web-comics), who just stands there approving the message.
Oh, I should have read the headline … thought it was supposed to be the 'day of the tentacle' … tentacle. And the blackboards makes also more sense now. Never mind then.

At least I'm not that bad, when it comes to actually speaking English. Makes me feel a little better. But I'm concerned, that I didn't recognize only three or four of the shows there … what have I done with my life...
