So Christianity and music are two things I care about and I feel that there is in fact some good, great and even legimately fantastic music out there that only occasionally reaches larger fan bases because of the negative connoctation that is placed on Christian Music. While this is true with a notable number of Christian bands, Newsboys, man Newsboys, I can really get into that, Newsboys is thing, but it's not the thing, is what I am trying to say. I considered just putting these in the normal music thread, but I feel this makes it easier to ignore and easier to reply to without breaking the flow of the thread. (Also I needed a reason to really get back into this stuff, I've kind of been out of my element for a long time now so this might actually help me as a human being as I talk about stuff I enjoy.)
Ultimately the point for me here is to get people outside of their musical comfort zone and introduce some good music people might otherwise never have heard of, so other types of music and bands that largely don't fit inside the general concensus because of the intended audience and such.
So yeah, I'll try to basically pick a band each week and just generally show off their stuff and I might as well use this post to quickly outline some stuff.
To get into the meat of things, let's start off with asking 'what is Christian music'?
To put it simply, because this is a discussion, the artist is Christian and more importantly makes music with a message aimed at positivity and made for a Christian fan base. As such bands like the reformation of Five Iron Frenzy, which is fantastic, and should be listened too, please, just do it, especially now that they've gone into a different alternative route and have opened up with agnostic and Christian members alike to be more open in their music, or bands like OneRepublic which are already main stream to begin with. But seriously, Five Iron Frenzy, they're really good.
For every band I'll discuss I'll bring up two of their most important features, namely how heavily feature their religion through their music and their general style and how often, and more importantly how, they switch it up.
So let's start of with one of my personal favorites and probably the best I'll ever feature on here, I'd make a religious reference, but sadly that one story about Jesus making wine is only about Jesus being a totaly alcoholic and not the saving the best for last bit. That'd be stupid.
Relient K, this band has had quite a bit of recognisition outside of their scene so this might even be too obvious, these guys are goofs, just the goofiest and they switch up music quite a bit, though they tend to remain in the alternative rock scene as such their music also tends to swing heavily between how overtly religious it is, generally they tend to skirt past it so that they go to the heart of matters but they always tend to at least bring a general message of redemption, belief, positivity and general snarkiness. Their oddball rarities are usually fantastic and fun, their general stuff tends to vary heavily in tone but tends to have a hopeful tone and/or energy.
As such I might as well start with one of their oddball rarities, which is a fun little song about Beaming, Scotty and complaining at the wrong people. Ok that last part is not really the intended message but it's true.
For actually going into their main stuff I might as well start with the tittle song from their latest album which is also something that shows their diversity.
Here is two examples of other great songs from their latest CD, Elephant Parade which is a pretty nice feel good song about feeling bad and Mrs. Hippotamus, which is about them from being Ohio and liking the Cleveland Bruins.
Here is two older songs of their that are just generally amongst my favorites.
Though I'd also advise the demo version of this as it's a more relaxing version, I decided to go with the official one. Also it ends on 'Silly Shoes' which is a song that shows off their oddball side, hurray.
I'll end it off at something that's a bit more religious but a good example of how they try to keep thing opened enough to make it for all audiences.
So to sum up they offer great lyrics, good music and inspiring and positive messages about trying to do better and doing better. Their music can go into the Christian side of things but they tend to not want to be too preachy about their beliefs.
Don't worry, I have garbage tastes in everything, including but not limited to music, and I know nothing about what I'm talking about so pointing out my mistakes here isn't too hard and entirely welcome. Also if people want to hear certain types of music covered, or just in general want to challenge me on that, try me. There is some weird music in the alternative Christian scene, there are some super fantastic people there. So yes, that's a thing I am going to try do unless I get shouted down and curl up and die.
