So, for some reason, recently I got back into reading comic books. And I decided to re-read Rat Queens, which I picked up some years ago, and enjoyed but didn't finish (the comic is still coming out, so it's not exactly finished today either).
And it was super good. I want to tell everyone here about it. But not just because it's good on its own, but for another super-specific reason:
RAT QUEENS IS BASICALLY DICE FUNK THE COMIC
I am not joking. When reading I occasionally couldn't believe the similarities. Like, is it secretly written by one of the funky trio? Or did one of them take inspiration from the comic book?
Okay, here's what it's all about.
The comic is set in a more or less typical D&D-ish setting, and the main characters are a group of badass heroes-mercenaries known as Rat Queens. The entire comic is about their crazy adventures and hi-jinks. Rat Queens are really powerful, but they are also rowdy, horny, and constantly get in trouble.
Cool similarities with Dice Funk (or just cool things in general):
1. The first major story arc in the story is about them going on a small quest, that slowly becomes a big adventure with a Cthulhu-like monsters attacking their hometown (sounds familiar?). They even have a villain who summons these monster with the help of powerful artifact.
The setting is also very Stoneroot, though the characters are pretty much from the start are as powerful as Season 2 characters were at the end. It does get a bit weirder after the first story arc though.
2. One of the main characters gets her powers from some mysterious demon that watches over her, and she can't tell the others about it. Funny...I knew a monk who had the same problem.
3. Betty is pretty much Anne. I am not exaggerating. Unlike Anne, Betty is an assassin, but aside from that it's basically the same frigging character. Betty is a hafling-assassin, and she is generally the dumbest of the group which results in all sorts of comedic scenes. Betty alone is worth reading this comic. She is amazing. And she looks pretty much exactly the way I picture Anne.
4. It's incredibly funny. I rarely laugh at comic books, so this was a rare one for me. It's one of the two most genuinely funny comic book I've ever read. And it's humor goes from basic Whedon-esque banter to full-on weird kink stuff like Rick and Morty or Archer. I'd say Dice Funk is also much in the same style.
5. Despite comedy, it manages to be very serious and dramatic when needed. Beyond the jokes, all characters are suprisingly deep, well-rounded and have interesting back-stories. One of the best compliments I have for almost any work of fiction is that the characters are so good, watching them just spend a day together is just as fun as their crazy adventures.
6. One of the main characters is named Violet. Unfortunately she is not a unicorn, but instead she is a dwarf warrior and is more like Jane from Stoneroot in character.
7. There are several other mercenary groups, one of them is called Four Daves. And, you guessed it, all guys from it are Daves. Jeffs, anyone?
8. Braga is awesome.
That's unrelated to Dice Funk. I just wanted to say that Braga is awesome.
9. Everyone's super-horny pretty much all the time. The characters talk about fucking all the time, and do it often too. There are some great ships (Orc Dave and Violet are the most adorable in my opinion).
10. It's super-progressive. All the main four characters are women. One of them is a short person, one is a woman of color, and another one is a dwarf and she actually has facial hair (which is incredibly cool and novel). There are lots of other really cool strong female characters, none of whom fit your typical tropes. There are lots of queer and trans characters too, and homophobia is non-existent in this world. It's actually one of the most feminist reads in comics I've ever seen. I'm loving it.
11. The art is amazing.
This one speaks for itself. I am not a big fan of digital art, personally. And I really am not enjoying the shift in style in later volumes. But it's amazing. The character designs are all super-creative and cool. I especially dig facial expressions, cause they make for 50% of how the comedy works.
So, that's it. Totally recommend y'all to read it. It's great.
