I was about to comment on the video with my thoughts on 2016 summer movies, but then I remembered I don't have to talk to a bunch of randos on youtube since this is technically a Renegade Cut episode
So, 2016 = worst summer ever? ...No. Also fuck you. And no. Not everything is the "worst thing ever", internet.
Though I do agree that a lot of the big ones fell flat and/or had technical problems, but eh, we're getting blockbusters year-round now, so what if the summer isn't always perfect?
Thoughts on the ones I did see:
Captain America Civil War - Love it, thought it was great. Black Panther was super cool (and pretty cute~ >u-) and Spider-Man, while I'm not keen on him being a high schooler AGAIN (come on, guys, Spidey was only in high school for maybe 50 issues before he spent the next 700+ issues in college/the adult world), he was still pretty fun, and I like how the eye lenses make it so he can have the expressive eyes he does in the comics. Also, the revelation that leads to Cap and Tony's final fight gets me choked up whenever I see it.
Also love how Zemo pulls off being a comic book style villain without being too silly about it. All he wants is REVENGE!, not world domination or some shady corrupt business something, and he masterminds events in ways that BvS's Lex Luthor only wishes he was subtle enough to pull off.
X-Men Apocalypse - First time I saw it I thought it was okay, but a bit overlong with too many characters and subplots. The Quicksilver scene was the most fun part of the movie, but also strained my suspension of disbelief with how many people he was able to rescue in what must have been only a couple minutes, especially when he keeps pausing mid-run to do quirky things. Didn't care for the Wolverine scene at all, since it just felt tacked-on and made his future relationship with Jean seem extra creepy. Also, what happened to Mystique posing as Stryker at the end of DoFP? How did Wolvie end up in Weapon X again after that?
Plus that jab at Return of the Jedi irked me a little. *pats RotJ dvd box, her precious baby* Funny how that "third movie is the worst" quip backfired on Apocalypse, though.
Ghostbusters - Mixed feelings on it. I don't like how they played up the "controversy" to get people to see it so they wouldn't feel like they're being sexist (Red Letter Media did a breakdown of it, and it seems like Sony was intentionally using the sexist reactions to hide the "this doesn't look funny" reactions). Saw the movie anyway, because why not, and while I found a few of the jokes so bone stupid that they were funny (Mike Hat XD), most of them weren't doing it for me. I started to get into it more by the end, though, so if they make another one... maybe I'll see it?
Star Trek Beyond - Went into this one hearing a lot of people say they were surprised how good it was, so maybe I got my hopes up too much, because I was just bored. The action was so dark and shaky that it was giving me a headache to watch, and so much of the movie was dark in general (the villain's lair, the planet at night) that it was hard to see anything. Jayla as a character seemed like my kind of girl, but the first time she pulled a knife was an instant turn-off. As someone who's larped, That's Not How You Hold A Knife! Locking your arm like that gives you no room to stab without pulling back first. What are you going to do, lean into him and hope it's forceful enough to cut him a little? Blah. (I have the same issue with Ian McDiarmid in Episode III; great actor when he speaks, but he has NO IDEA how to hold a sword properly)
Suicide Squad - Yes, it's an editing mess. Yes, Joker and Harley have a squicky, abusive relationship (as they always have) and most of it ended up on the editing room floor because it was a loosely-connected subplot to begin with. Yes, the music is so overpowering that it might as well be a 2-hour music video. I still enjoyed it though. Will Smith was fun and charming, Captain Boomerang's plush unicorn got a giggle every time I saw it, and Enchantress's wacky dancing makes me want to go learn some crazy moves (if only I wasn't a shy shut-in... ah well)
Sausage Party - Fucking hilarious. It's like a raunchy Pixar movie with drugs and sex jokes everywhere, that also spends a lot of time breaking down the philosophical implications of religion. Very likely to be in my Top 3 for the year
